Victory in Truth

Tomorrow is the last day to cast your ballot and to vote for the candidate who you believe will represent your values, will be faithful to the U.S. and Constitutions, and will get government out of the way of small business so we can get Washington working again.

I want to thank all of you for your support and diligent prayers. We know that God’s plan is far greater than we can even fathom, and we are blessed to have been able to walk in His will and under His blessing. We could not have done it without you. We have doorbelled 14,000 houses in the past 6 months, and enjoyed the opportunity to spread the message of freedom and limited government, not only in the 4th district, but throughout the state of Washington.

Standing for principle means becoming a target and throughout this campaign, we have had many unfortunate personal attacks from local officials, candidates, and media based on false accusations and intentional misrepresentation. For any last minute questions of friends and neighbors visit “Truth” page, visit or simply click on the “Truth” button on my homepage.

I wear this target as a badge of honor and I promise that whatever the schooled but uneducated liberal elitists from Seattle throw my way, I will keep steadfastly standing for the values that made America and Washington great.

For the past four years, I have been blessed and honored to serve as your 4th District State Representative, and I look forward to serving you again this coming January in Olympia.

I am saddened by the release by a national media outlet of my opponent’s involvement in pornography. I strongly condemn the release of this information. Our campaign was aware of this information several months ago, and made a very determined decision to not use or disperse this information in any way, shape, or form. I specifically instructed the few members of my campaign team who knew of this situation to not disseminate this information, engage in negative, personal attack campaigning, even though my opponent had already done so. This type of negative campaigning is exactly what is wrong with politics today. While these revelations are indeed alarming, my heart goes out to Amy and her family. My wife Viktoriya and I will continue to pray for her.

NEWS RELEASE: Bringing in the Harvest

Friday, October 5th – The first weekend of October turned out to be a very busy weekend for the Shea family. Matt took a break from campaigning to help out in our community. Friday was a day spent in the vineyards at Trezzi Farm picking grapes. The grapes were then pressed to become wine.

Beautiful weather and great company made for a weekend where friends still lend a hand and help harvest a bountiful crop.

After the grapes were picked, pressed, and all of the equipment (and people) cleaned up, all enjoyed a lovely authentic Italian meal around the Trezzi’s table.

Saturday, October 6th – Joined by Jeff Holy and Mike Fagan, Matt kicked Saturday off early with the “Feather Me Pink” event raising awareness and money for the American Cancer Society at Angelina Salon’s annual event.

Matt Shea’s Recommendations – General Election 2012

Key Contested State Races

Supreme Court Pos. 9 – Richard Sanders –

 U.S. Senator – Michael Baumgartner (R) –

 State Treasurer – Sharon Hanek (R) –

 State Auditor – James Watkins (R) –

Commissioner of Public Lands – Clint Didier (R) – One of the most important positions, thePLC is in charge of managing millions of acres of public land.  Clint grasps the anti-property rights agenda and his experience as a farmer makes him the right man for the job.

 3rd Legislative District

State Senator – Nancy McLaughlin (R)  Nancy is a longtime, stalwart Christian Conservative who would help lead the charge to encourage job growth in Spokane.

State Representative Pos. 1 – Tim Benn (R) –  Tim is an experienced uncompromising fighter for lower taxes, less government, and more freedom.  His decisions will be guided by Christian principles and tempered by his knowledge of the State Constitution.

State Representative Pos. 2 – Dave White (R) –  Dave is a longtime 3rd District resident who understands the economic issues of the 3rd District from a worker’s perspective and is willing to make the hard decisions to bring our state budget back under control.

6th Legislative District

State Representative Pos. 2 – Jeff Holy (R) –  Jeff is by far and away the most qualified experienced candidate in this race.  He was the only candidate to earn the endorsement of Human Life PAC for his staunch pro-life stand and the only candidate in the race to earn a perfect 5-Star rating from We Believe We Vote for his conservative worldview.

7th Legislative District

State Representative Pos. 2 – Joel Kretz (R) –  Joel is a battle hardened conservative who is also Deputy Leader of the House Republican Caucus.  Joel is tied with yours truly as the most “Conservative Legislator Lifetime” according to the Washington Conservative Union.

Ballot Issues – General Elections 2012

Initiative Measure No. 1185 (Requiring to 2/3rds Vote Raise Taxes) – Vote YES

Yes, once again we must vote on this.  Democrats have sued voters for approving this requirement and are looking at any way to repeal it.  Why?  It forces, government to live within its means just like all of us.  Instead of just raising taxes as a solution, government should make the hard decisions to cut spending by addressing all of the fraud, waste, and inefficiency in the system.

Initiative Measure No. 1240 (Creating Charter Schools) – Vote NO

This recommendation may come as a surprise to some of you as I am a strong supporter of education choice.  I do support the concept of charter schools because central to the success of charter schools is the removal of unfunded mandates, de-centralization of control, holding bad teachers accountable, and holding students to high standards.  However, I think all public schools should have the option to become charter schools.  The current bill does not allow that and will likely lead to massive lawsuits.

Referendum Measure No. 74 (Re-Defining Marriage) – Vote REJECT

Same-sex couples already have the same rights benefits and privileges as married couples.  This bill also eviscerates the long standing, well recognized, fundamental right of conscientious objection (the right not to participate in an activity based on sincerely held religious beliefs).  It would force small business owners like florists, bakers, photographers, hotel owners and the like to participate in same-sex wedding ceremonies against their willWatch at the 4 minute mark here. No one should have to choose between their conscience and their livelihood.  That is simply un-American.

Initiative Measure No. 502 (Legalizing Marijuana) – Vote NO

Regardless of your views on marijuana, this measure is a massive tax increase that would also massively increase the size and scope of government.  A better solution is to legalize non-THCcommercial hemp creating a new industry in Washington manufacturing sisal twine for our hops fields and vineyards (instead of importing) and legalize marijuana in nebulized form only (like an inhaler) to be prescribed by doctors and issued by pharmacies just like every other narcotic.

Engrossed Senate Joint Resolution No. 8221 (Reducing the Debt Limit) – Vote APPROVE

This is a constitutional amendment which would reduce the state debt limit in phases.  This would in turn reduce the total state debt.  What a great idea.

Senate Joint Resolution No. 8223 (Allowing University Investment) Vote APPROVE

This is a constitutional amendment that would allow public universities like WSU and UW to invest public funds as authorized by the legislature in private companies or stock.  It allows more flexibility with funds and could very well end up helping alleviate higher tuition rates to some extent, all without having to raise taxes.

I want to thank Sheriff Knezovich for his openness in evaluating the training presented by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The law enforcement training program developed by Sheriff Knezovich, while drawing nationwide attention and participants, has had a positive fiscal impact instead of being a burden on taxpayers.

Last year I was invited to, and attended, a training seminar hosted by Sheriff Knezovich. The seminar was presented by the extremely liberal Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).  I wanted to see for myself whether rumors I had heard about the SPLC were true. I observed that they demonized several well respected conservative organizations by name and one local grassroots leader in particular. This was in addition to designating organizations, like the well-known Family Research Council, as a “hate group” (Click here for article). Needless to say I was appalled.

After several discussions with Sheriff Knezovich, it was clear to me that he had no knowledge of the SPLC’s radical leftwing agenda.  In addition, I want to thank him personally for taking the extraordinary step of stating publically that he will never again sponsor an event with the SPLC or similar groups.  Likewise, I have committed to Sheriff Knezovich that I will voice any concerns I may have about an organization prior to the event and provide him with information to allow for a more balanced decision.

Thank you Sheriff Knezovich for your diplomatic approach to the SPLC situation, and I look forward to working with you again in the future for the benefit of all whom we serve.

PRESS RELEASE: Worker’s Compensation Rates Stay the Same, Shea Idea Key Component of Reform

Rep. Shea hails Worker’s Compensation Advisory Committee decision to not change rates as a victory for small businesses.

On September 17th, the Workers Compensation Advisory Committee, Director Judy Schurke announced that L&I is proposing a zero premium rate change for the 2013 worker compensation rates. This is a huge victory for small business. One of the main reasons for keeping rates at current levels is the 2011 Worker’s Compensation reform package including expanding the use of Healthcare Provider Networks and Rep. Shea’s idea of structured settlements broke which broke the stalemate and allowed the first major reform in over 2 decades. (Click here for the full Spokesman Review Article)

Shea is committed to introducing and approving legislation to get Washington’s fiscal house in order.  His next priority is getting his amendment to the State Constitution (HJR 4225) passed out of the house which would require the legislature to pass a balanced budget.

In an article published in the Spokesman Review titled “2011 WA Lege: Counting winners and loosers,” Shea is recognized as having “the best-timed, if not the best, idea of the session.” regarding workers comp changes. (Click here for the full Spokesman Review article)

In 2009, Shea was recognized as the most effective legislator of his class earning the “Rookie of the Year Award” from the Everett Herald.  “The key issue in this election is getting government out of the way of small business so we can get Washington working again” said Shea. ”I am proud to be part of implementing that solution.

PRESS RELEASE: Focusing On The Issues – Focusing On The Truth

There they go again…over the weekend Representative Matt Shea’s opponent, a former Democrat County Party Chair who moved here from Seattle, sent out a hit-piece about an incident that happened 10 months ago. The hit-piece is categorically untrue.  What can you do to help?

2. Know the truth. See the attached statements that unequivocally refute the hit-piece and spread this information to your friends and neighbors.
3. Endorse Matt, help him doorbell, put a sign up, and donate by going to his website – Click here to visit the website.

This is Spokane Valley, not Seattle, and we are Americans that should be working together to solve the great crisis facing our nation. That means we as Washingtonians should be working together to get government out of the way of small businesses so we can get Washington working again.

Matt Shea is a proven conservative Christian leader whose voting record and qualifications speak for themselves: Small Business Owner; Constitutional Attorney; 10 Year Army Combat Veteran; 100% Voting Record for Small Business; 5 Star Rating From We Believe We Vote for Stance on Life, Marriage, and Family;  Consistently Endorsed by the Washington Association of Police and Sheriffs (WACOPS); A+ Rating from the NRA and endorsed by Gun Owners of America; Rated “Outstanding…One of CAPR’s Top Ten Washington State Representatives;” and Ranked the most conservative State Representative Lifetime (Washington Conservative Union). However, Matt doesn’t just stand on principle. He is one of the most effective legislators in Olympia.  He was recognized in 2009 as the Rookie Legislator of the Year by the Everett Herald and after the ranking budget member, Matt Shea has passed more amendments and bills than any other Republican in the last four years earning him the nickname “Mr. Amendment.”  That is proven, effective, principled leadership.

PRESS RELEASE: We Believe We Vote Gives Matt Shea a Perfect Five Star Rating

August 6, 2012

Saturday, July 14 – We Believe We Vote (WBWV) is a nonpartisan organization that interviews candidates to determine their consistency with Biblical values, constitutional principles, and personal responsibility.

WBWV’s recommendations are regarded as a clear indicator of which candidates truly stand on principle and the five star rating is the highest rating given. Matt Shea is honored to receive their five star rating and stated that WBWV’s interview was “the most thorough comprehensive interview I have done as a candidate.” He went on to say that “WBWV’s voter guide establishes unequivocally where I stand on the issues that matter to the 4th Legislative District. When they can’t beat you on the issues they result to disparaging the person.” As a result of the WBWV rating, Shea fully expects the regular bevy of personal attacks in response to his principled conservative stand.

“I am sending you our 2012 Primary Voter Recommendations because you are listed as one of our top picks …Matt is the incumbent and has served the district honorably as a man of integrity and committed to all groups he has been a part of. Hate CrimeAs most of you already know, I am the State Representative for the 4th Legislative District, an ardent supporter of Israel, and a committed Christian.  However, some of you may not be aware of the support my campaign has received within the Messianic Jewish community.

Sometime between 10:30 p.m. May 29, 2012, Tuesday night, and 6:00 a.m. May 30, 2012, Wednesday morning four campaign signs were vandalized in the north Spokane Valley area.  The signs were spray painted with violent, threatening, hateful, sexually explicit, anti-Semitic, and anti-Christian words and symbols.  This is clearly an attempt to threaten, harass, and intimidate me and my family.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and I have also notified members of the Messianic Jewish community.

This hate crime follows on the heels of my involvement in the R-74 campaign to stop the blatantly unconstitutional SB 6239 and my outspoken criticism of current Democrat leadership in Olympia and their continued inability to pass a truly sustainable balanced budget after wasting half the session on homosexual marriage.  It appears I was targeted by members of the violent and radical progressive movement for my conservative consistent stand for limited constitutional government and my religious beliefs.

To the person or persons who sought to silence my voice through intolerance and intimidation, let me be perfectly clear: I am not moved.  I will not bow to what appears to be a threat on my life with the skull & cross bones, concertina wire, and cross-out symbol depicted on one sign.  And as a combat veteran of the Iraq war and so soon after Memorial Day, I think it is important to speak directly to those on the radical left who would seek to divide us and this country: YOU WILL NOT dishonor the memories of our fallen heroes with your hate or intimidate me into submission.  We can disagree on reigning in spending in state government and same-sex marriage but the outright physical attack on those who disagree with you is un-American.

Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident.

Over the past few months many Conservative Christians and Messianic Jews throughout Washington, including sitting legislators and their family members have also been the targets of intimidation and harassment including assaults, threatening emails, midnight phone calls, and even the total destruction of a car:

I condemn in the strongest possible terms this bigoted intolerance and the anti-Semitic and anti-Christian words and symbols used.  Jews and Christians were horrifically persecuted under the Nazi regime and heroes like Martin Niemoller and Dietrich Bonhoeffer would be horrified to see similar overtones emerging here in Spokane Valley.  Religious persecution in any form is hostile to the founding principles of America.

As the elected Representative of all residents of Spokane Valley, the 4th Legislative District, and those of all faiths, I call on community, civic, and political leaders of all persuasions, including my opponent and the Spokane County Democrat Party, to join me in publically and immediately condemning this hate crime and calling for those responsible to be held to account.

In Freedom,

Matt Shea
